The BDO office building in Breda is notable not just for being the most sustainable building in the city, but also for serving as an example of how innovative solutions can be integrated to create inspiring spaces. When Renovatie started looking for a new head office in 2004, it fell in love with the old goods station. This impressive architectural heritage building, which had been vacant since 1988, was considered as being the perfect sustainable investment project. The neoclassical building thus became the first private investment in the neighbourhood. Powerhouse Company was founded by Nanne de Ru (1976, the Netherlands) and Charles Bessard (1970, France) in 2005. As urbanization continues to increase around the world, cities are expanding rapidly, and planners are trying to predict future scenarios. This is particularly true for the city of Amsterdam, where urbanization means, above all, intensification and diversification. Amsterdam has a long tradition of integrated planning of its growth, with the century-old canal system as the protagonist. Architecture and urban development have always been closely intertwined, in its own unique way, throughout every period of growth. This has made the city of Amsterdam one of the most fascinating showcases of the relationship between architecture and urban development. The recent debate on how to achieve the right density in different parts of the city is an example of this attitude. The Breda public transport terminal is one of six new Dutch stations commissioned as part of the New Key Projects, a government initiative led by the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. “The building is characterised by a multitude of perspectives, voids and openings, which allow daylight deep into the building and enables the substantial building to be experienced as a single coherent building volume,” added the studio. To break up the huge bulk of the building and allow for plenty of light inside, the architects used voids and large expanses of glazing – including several atriums filled with trees.

Shift architecture urbanism and Powerhouse Company win the tender for Coulissen West, the last piece of the large urban development West of Breda Central Station. “In Breda, the changes in the design – which occurred over the course of the design phases – are expressed and celebrated in the brickwork,” they added. “The result is a nuanced facade of a human scale and with a place in the history of the city.” Koen van Velsen Architects has created a new transport hub in Dutch city Breda, featuring a huge entrance canopy and a variety of brickwork styles (+ slideshow). Her interests include the relationship between environmental characteristics and the way people move and use space. In her scientific work, she focuses, among other things, on the care of urban value. In March 2009 – in the heat of the global financial crisis – Dutch architect Syb van Breda found himself at the start of a new adventure. Brick paving and glossy blue paint feature on the concourses, while wood forms steps, and benches define spaces for the public to relax. Koen van Velsen Architects is based in the city of Hilversum in north Holland. Among the studio's previous projects is a rehabilitation centre in a Dutch forest. All in all, the architect succeeded brilliantly in giving the former multi-company building a new purpose. This is reflected not only in the use of low-maintenance materials such as aluminium, but also in energy efficiency. The “ALUMINIUM WALL COPINGS TURNED OUT TO BE THE PERFECT SOLUTION” while building even complies with Breeam Very Good. An equally radical change is that a beautiful void has been built in the corner of the L, which is like a triangle between the two sides.
